Adolescent Development in an Age of Social Media

A special issue of Journal of Adolescent Research (JAR) will feature empirical articles that address the developmental dimensions of adolescents’ and emerging adults’ networked technology use. Papers are welcome from a variety of fields such as psychology, sociology, education, anthropology, communication, social work, and human-computer interaction. JAR’s focus on mixed-methods and qualitative research makes it a perfect platform for showcasing high quality studies that explore the multi-faceted, nuanced dimensions of youth’s social technology use. This special issue will contribute needed insight into the complex interactions between human development and networked technologies. Topics of interest to this special issue may include, but are not limited to:

  • identity/self development
  • self-presentation, audience interaction/cultivation
  • peer relationships
  • parenting, family relationships
  • intimacy
  • gender, sexuality, sexual orientation
  • race, ethnicity, culture
  • socioeconomic status/digital divide
  • civic engagement
  • moral/ethical development
  • mental health and wellbeing
  • problematic internet behaviors
  • formal and informal learning
  • different uses of specific social media sites across development, e.g., Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter
