Dr. Shauna Cooper Announced as Interim Editor of Child Development

The Governing Council of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) is pleased to announce the 3-year appointment of Dr. Shauna M. Cooper as Interim Editor of Child Development. An Associate Editor for Child Development since 2019, her term as Interim Editor begins January 2023. Dr. Cooper is a Professor in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. She is also a Faculty Fellow at UNC’s Frank Porter Graham Child Development Institute, Center for Faculty Excellence, and a faculty affiliate of the Carolina Consortium on Human Development. 

Dr. Cooper’s areas of expertise include the social and cultural contexts of development, with an emphasis on family and community factors. Additionally, using varied methodological approaches, she has made contributions to the study of fathering processes, involvement, and implications for child well-being and development. Her work has been supported by the National Science Foundation and the Eunice K. Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Dr. Cooper brings a range of experience in scientific editing, including serving as an Associate Editor for Child Development, an Editorial Board Member for several developmental science, psychology, and multidisciplinary journals, and a reviewer for a number of peer-reviewed journals and funding agencies.

Dr. Cooper has held numerous leadership and advisory roles at UNC-Chapel Hill and the national level. These leadership and advisory roles reflect a commitment to developmental science and diverse contexts of human development, including Co-Chair of the Society for Research in Adolescence’s (SRA) Consensus Committee, a member of SRCD’s Social Policy Engagement Working Group, and Past-Chair of SRCD’s Black Caucus from 2013-2017. Dr. Cooper has been an active member of the SRCD organization for over 20 years.

“Shauna Cooper brings a breadth of editorial experience to the Interim Editor-in-Chief role, especially from her current position as Associate Editor for Child Development. I am delighted she is taking on this role in the interim as we find a permanent editor for the publication,” said SRCD President, Dr. Nancy E. Hill. She added, “I know her experience in diverse methodologies and theoretical orientations will serve the Society well as we continue to strengthen our vision for the future of SRCD publications.”

Dr. Cooper has experience with the journal as an associate editor as well as co-editor for the special issue, Advancing Scholarship on Anti-racism within Developmental Science. Dr. Cooper also brings with her additional experience as she has served on numerous editorial boards for top disciplinary journals. Dr. Cooper’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in developmental science will complement the mission of SRCD’s flagship journal, Child Development. The Governing Council is grateful for the service of outgoing Editor-in-Chief, Dr. Glenn I. Roisman. Dr. Roisman is the Robert Holmes Beck Chair of Ideas in Education and Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Institute of Child Development, University of Minnesota. His scholarly interests concern the legacy of early relationship experiences as a foundation for psychological, interpersonal, physical, and cognitive health across the lifespan.

Dr. Roisman will continue handling the review for solicited special sections and articles until the end of his term on May 4, 2023.
