SRCD Expresses Condolences for Buffalo

The Society for Research in Child Development mourns the tragic racist events that occurred this past weekend in Buffalo, New York. We grieve with both the local community and the nation for all who lost their lives and offer support to the families who lost loved ones.

SRCD stands in solidarity against all forms of racism and discrimination against minoritized individuals, families, and communities. The developmental sciences have consistently documented the deleterious effects of racial trauma on children and youths’ mental health and sense of security long after exposure to racialized tragedies. This weekend we faced yet another targeted attack on an African American community, which has robbed families of loved ones and disrupted the peace.

We support the recent message shared by the SRCD Black Caucus to promote the development and well-being of Black children, families, and communities, as well as the Black scientists who study child development.

In her most recent blog post, SRCD’s President, Nancy E. Hill shares her personal experience and shares concerns for helping her own son navigate this news and expresses how the developmental science community must come together during these circumstances to improve the lives of ALL children.

Sincerely,

SRCD Governing Council
