About the webinar:

The Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD) will be hosting a webinar on July 23, 2024 from 11 a.m. EDT-12:15 p,.m. EDT discussing research on child development when living in and displaced from conflict. The webinar will be moderated by Dr. Laura K. Taylor, Associate Professor in the School of Psychology at University College Dublin, who studies positive development and social inclusion among children living in conflict zones, and Dr. Valerie Adams-Bass, Assistant Professor of Childhood Studies, Rutgers University, New Jersey, whose expertise includes supporting children in emergency situations.  Guest speakers include:  Dr. Angelica Ponguta, Research Scientist in the Child Study Center; Affiliated Faculty, Yale Institute for Global Health and Jacobs Foundation Early Research Career Fellow, sharing expertise on early childhood development in emergencies; Dr. Ozden Pinar Irmak, Department of Curriculum and Instruction, University of Massachusetts, Boston, presenting research on displacement and its impacts on children; and Dr. Dinka Čorkalo Biruški, Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Zagreb in Croatia, focusing on research in post-conflict rebuilding. The panelists’ presentations will be followed by a 30-minute question and answer session moderated by Dr. Taylor and Dr. Adams-Bass. Learning goals for this webinar include: 

  1. Understand the latest science about the impact of living in conflict zones on child well-being and development;  
  2.  Contextualize the study of child development in the context of conflict; 
  3. Recognize how developmental science shines a light on resilience and children's agency in such settings; 
  4. Apply research into future teaching, research, and practice.
