Dr. Rebecca Martin
Professor of Psychology at South Dakota State University
Dr. Rebecca Martin is a Professor at South Dakota State University in the School of Psychology, Sociology, and Rural Studies. She earned her Ph.D. in Developmental Psychology from the University of Connecticut in 2004. Courses that she normally teaches include Child Psychology (Developmental Psychology), Child Psychopathology, Psychological Gender Issues, and History and Systems of Psychology. She has also taught General Psychology and Research Methods and Statistics. Dr. Martin serves on her university’s teacher education faculty committee. Her current research topics include 1) examining the role of gender stereotypes on preschoolers understanding of basic emotions, 2) the impact of feedback, type of test, sex, and trait gender on performance and performance expectations, 3) the influence of gendered rewards on competitive behavior in preschoolers and adults, and 4) creating a new assessment instrument to assess trait gender.
Dr. Derina Samuel
Associate Director for Graduate Student Development at the Center for Teaching Innovation at Cornell University
Dr. Derina Samuel is the Associate Director for Graduate Student Development at the Center for Teaching Innovation (CTI). She holds a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and MA in Public Administration from Syracuse University, and a BS and MS in Chemistry from the University of Zambia. Derina works closely with graduate students, teaching assistants and postdoctoral fellows to support their teaching and promote reflective practices. Her research and teaching interests over the past two decades have focused on future faculty programming, as well as professional development resources for graduate students and postdoctoral fellows. Most recently, she co-edited ‘Teaching Gradually: Practical Pedagogy for Graduate Students, by Graduate Students’ (Armstrong et al., 2021). Though this edited volume was written for graduate student instructors, by graduate students with substantive teaching experience, it is designed to be a resource for anyone new to teaching and learning in higher education.
